"Hi Jax". "Hi Mia". "How you doing today?", asked Mia. "Can't complain, and you?", he asked. "Another day another dollar", she said. Jax gave her a quizzical look, "Aren't you a volunteer?", he asked. Mia chuckled, "So I guess that's not another dollar?" and gave him a small smile. Mia was almost finished straightening up his room to head to the next. Jax was putting on his prosthetic leg to head to his PT session. Before Mia left she hesitated at the door. Jax asked, "Forget something?" She shook her head and hesitated for a few more moments. She looked at him briefly and asked, "Can I ask you a favor?" It was his turn to hesitate. He didn't really know her that well, but well enough. In the 9 months he'd been at the VA hospital no one had asked him for anything. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Sure." She was fidgeting and Jax said, "Is it that bad of a favor?" She chuckled and said, "No, not really". She went on to ask, "Would you mind giving me a ride to/from my line dance lessons? You don't have to go in or anything...unless you want too. I go to line dance lessons on Fridays and my friend that I usually go with isn't available." He was shocked. He looked at her and then down to his prosthetic. He finally said, "I don't think that would be a good idea." Mia's face instantly fell. She said, "It's ok. I understand." and turned to leave. Jax quickly asked, "Understand what?" She turned back towards him with sad eyes and said, "Well, I am older than you, I'm not drop dead gorgeous...and you..well you are..." She looked away again and added, "and hot. Why would you want to go anywhere with me?" He sat there and watched her walk out the door dumbfounded. That's not what he expected her to say. He didn't see himself as any of that. He wasn't even a "full" man like he used to be.

When Monday rolled around he was anxious to see Mia. He missed her when she had cleaned his room and he wondered if she had found a ride to her lessons. While he was eating lunch he caught site of her, but her hair was in front of her face. She was definitely avoiding being seen. He could tell something was wrong because her posture was stiff and she wasn't make eye contact with anyone except for those at her table. She got up to leave and he stood and said her name. She looked towards who called and quickly put her hand over her face and left the room. Jax didn't know what to make of that so he gimped/jogged to catch up with her. She still wouldn't stop even though he hollered her name. He finally yelled, "Mia, STOP!" Surprisingly she did. Once he caught up to her she wouldn't look at him so he took hold of her upper arm to turn her and she winced. She had on a t-shirt so he pushed up the sleeve a bit. There was a large bruise like someone had grabbed her as there were finger impressions left behind. She finally said, "Hi Jax, how are you?" He didn't know how to respond to her. He asked, "What happened?" as he tried to lift her face up. She pulled back. She blew it off and said, "Nothing that you need to worry about?" She tried to walk away, but he kept step with her. He'd been working hard on his PT and was getting stronger every day. He changed tactics and asked about Friday night and if she was able to make it to her lessons. She politely responded yes and said thanks for asking. He finally stepped in front of her and she bounced off of him which made her look up at him. That's when he saw that she had a busted lip and a black and blue eye. His eyes flashed with anger. He asked again who had done this and she again pushed him off and said, "Just leave it alone. Remember you said, "not a good idea", I guess you were right." She walked off saying, "See you later."

For the next several days Mia had successfully avoided Jax. Cleaning his room while he was at his PT session, making sure she avoided the cafeteria. Jax didn't realize that he had started to look forward to her daily visits even though they mostly just chit chatted about nonsensical topics. He missed her smile...when he could get her to smile. He finally started asking around to see if he could find out what had happened. He caught one of her work friends and was able to find out that Mia had been attacked while waiting for a cab Friday night after her dance lessons had ended. Luckily only her purse had been taken, but not before they got in a couple of good hits. Part of him wished he'd just let it go. Now he feels even more guilty as he figured that something must have happened.

It was Friday again and Jax had switched his PT to be first thing in the morning so that he could be in his room until Mia decided to show up. He didn't even go to the cafeteria for lunch and ate in his room. Mia comes walking in at 3:00 in the afternoon which would normally have been in the middle of his PT session. She stopped when he asked how she was doing? She said, "Oh, I didn't know you would be here." and started to leave that she could come back later. He told her no, too stay. She busied herself cleaning up his room. He again asked how she was doing since she didn't answer the first time. She looked at him and said, "Ok." and went back to working. He noticed that her bruises were better. He wasn't sure if he should ask about her lessons tonight or not. She still wouldn't look at him. "So," he says. She kept working. "Are you going to your line dance lessons tonight?" She finally looked up and said, "Maybe." He asked, "Why maybe?" She was starting to get agitated and he really didn't want her to bolt. He casually walked over to his door while she worked around his bed. "Mia?" She finally turned around and asked, "Why do you want know?" He was leaning casually against his door frame and responded, "Just curious." She said, "Maybe, not sure yet." He asked, "Why?" She huffed out a breath in frustration. "Why do you care? Obviously it's not something you're interested in." He didn't answer, but instead said, "Is it because of what happened last week?" She looked down and tried to walk past him, but he stood up and blocked her exit. She looked up at him with misty eyes and said, "lease let me pass." He hadn't ever really noticed how small she was compared to him. She couldn't be over 5'5" or 5'6" to his 6'2" frame. She took a step back and again asked for him to move. He said, "On one condition, what's the name of the club you dance at?" She looked at him and at the door and back. He said, "Answer and you can leave." She hesitated again and said, "White Horse Saloon". He moved and she walked out. He really didn't know what he was going to do with the information. He didn't know where she lived so he knew he couldn't pick her up, but he could dang sure make sure she got home unharmed. He went to dinner in the cafeteria to see if he could find any of her work friends and find out if they knew if she was going to go tonight. He had no luck with confirming whether she was or was not going. He made the decision that either way he was going. After dinner he went back to his room, showered, changed, looked up directions, grabbed his truck keys and headed out the door. Since he lost part of his left leg just above the knee, driving wasn't an issue. He remembered her saying that her lessons were usually 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and he had arrived a little after 8:30 p.m. He had parked a few cars away from the door as this club was on an old downtown. The was only a few cars, so he didn't figure there were too many that came for the lessons. A few minutes before 9:00 he noticed a cab pull in. Jax left his truck and walked over to see if he was there for Mia. The driver said yes. Jax gave the guy a $50 and told him to get lost. He said, "No problem" and left. As he walked back to the truck he noticed that there was a pool hall on the opposite corner with several people milling around outside as he walked back to his truck. He stood on the other side of it and waited. He started to think that maybe this was a bad idea. She'll probably think he's a stalker. He saw Mia exit the club with another woman. They walked about a 1/2 block in the other direction gave each other a hug and her friend left. She waited for a few minutes looking both ways on the street...probably looking for her cab. She started to walk back towards the club, but then shook her head and headed the opposite direction. That's when he saw a couple of guys turn the corner towards her. She stopped and headed back towards the club, but then another man just walked out the club towards her. She was pale as a ghost so Jax new these must be the guys that had hassled her last week. When he looked back inside the door where the bouncer normally would be...there was no one. He looked across the street at the pool hall. Everyone was gone. Interesting he thought. He knew he had to do something, but taking on 3 guys...he wasn't so sure about. He had to do something so he came up quietly behind the first guy that came out of the club and did a sleeper hold on him to knock him out. The other two were too busy to notice what had happened to their buddy because they had pushed Mia up against the wall of the building. The bigger of the two had his hand at his throat. Jax continued to walk towards Mia who was begging for them to stop. He finally let his presence be known by saying, "Mia, are you ready to go?" The bigger of the two men let her go and stepped towards Jax while the other held Mia. He said, "She's not ready yet so git on outta here." Jax didn't take his eyes off the guy. He could hear Mia's breathing was rapid and she was wheezing from where he had her by the neck. Jax simply said, "I don't think so." The big guy took a step and a swing. Jax easily ducked and counterpunched the guy's mid-section where he doubled over. The last guy let go of Mia and backed up. I told Mia to go back into the club and call the cops. I told the guy let's get this done. He started forward as the other big guy was trying to get up. We heard sirens so the last guy helped up the big guy and they walked away...quickly. Jax headed to the club and walked inside looking for Mia. He saw her talking to one of the bouncers. Her cheeks were tear streaked. He walked over to her. He asked how she was doing. He lightly touched where her throat was red from where the big guy had held her up against the wall. She said, "Ok." He moved his hand to the side of her face and she leaned into. When the cops came through the door, she moved closer to Jax. Jax wasn't sure if she even realized what she had done. She was looking fairly pale again. When the door bouncer pointed towards him and Mia the cops whole attitude changed. He heard them say, "Oh." As they walked over they said, "So, it's you, huh?" Mia looked up at Jax and said, "Let's Go." Jax looked at the cops and asked, "on't you want our statements?" One of them said, "Sure, why not. So Mia what is this time? Did they tick you off so you called us?" Jax was starting to get … Mia again said, "Let's go." One of the cops, "That's your choice, isn't Mia?" He saw a tear run down her cheek. Jax said, "Fine, if you don't want to do your jobs, we'll find someone who will." The cops chuckled and said, "Good luck with that." Jax was livid. He didn't know what was going on, but knew these cops weren't going to do anything about what just happened. Once outside the club, Jax asked her if she'd like a ride home. She hesitated, but nodded yes. We walked her to his truck and got her buckled in and then walked around and got in. He asked where to and put the info into his GPS.

As they started to head towards her home, he asked what was that all about. She looked at him and said, "Nothing that you can with or fix so just let it go." Jax said, "No can do...goes against the grain." She gave him a small smile and said, "You have no idea." He said, "You're right, I don't, so why don't you fill me in." "Why do you want to know? Wait minute...why were you there anyway?" He gave her a sheepish grin and said, "Because I wanted to make sure you got home unharmed tonight." She responded with she had ordered a taxi, but he either was late or just didn't show up. She said she was going to call the cab company tomorrow and complain. He didn't want the driver to get in trouble and so he said, "I kind of paid him to leave and he did." She looked at him in disbelief and asked, "Why would you do that? You don't even like me." He gave her a sideways glance and asked, "Why do you think that?" She shrugged her shoulder and said, "Just a feeling." He didn't know what to make of that so he again asked, "What was up with the cops not taking your statement?" Tears were streaming down her cheeks, but she wasn't making noise. She just looked out the window and didn't respond.

So he changed tactics, "o you know those guys?" She said "No". "But yet they know where and when you go dancing." She simply said, "Apparently so." He wasn't sure what to make of her. He had driven to one of the suburbs and was almost to the address she had given him. She'd been quiet the rest of the drive to this address. When he pulled into the drive she finally spoke. "o you want to come in for a coffee or soda?" He asked, "o you want me to come in?" She shrugged and said, "It'd be nice, yes". He said, "Ok." and got out of the truck and walked around to her side that she was just stepping out of. When they got to the door she fumbled with her keys due to her hands were shaking so bad, but did get the door open. She walked in and he closed and locked the door behind them. She told him to make himself at home and she'd be right back. While she was gone he made a call to a friend who works for the state bureau of investigation office. He had finished before she returned to the living room. She asked, "What would you like to drink, coffee, soda?" He asked, "o you have anything stronger?" She hesitated and said, "Only wine." He said, "I'd like a glass if that's ok?" She shrugged and went to her kitchen. She came back with 2 glasses gave him one and then sat hers on the end table near an arm chair closest to her fireplace. She then went to her fireplace, started fire, went back to her chair, curled up and picked up her glass of wine. He waited. He wasn't even sure if she knew he was still there. They sat in the quiet for several minutes and she started to talk. "The reason they won't help is because of my husband. He died over a year ago "in the line of duty", she said with air quotes. He was an abusive … When I had to go to the ER a second time, too many questions were raised so a report was filed. However, with him being a cop my word didn't mean much against a veteran/respected cop of … Of course he wasn't always that way. We had been together almost 7 years the first 4 were great. Then he had one bad case and he started drinking and it when downhill from there. Even with pictures and accounts, his "buddies" never believed it was real. That he could actually beat on his wife. He had convinced them that I was unstable and very uncoordinated. I couldn't divorce him because he would never stop. He said he'd hurt my family, my sister... That's the reason for the cops attitude tonight. They believe I must have encouraged whatever had happened." "And me?" he asked. She gave a small snort, looked at her with again silent tears running down her face, and said, "If they believed you were with me, they would think you are just crazy." He'd had enough. He told her to come sit by him on the couch. She didn't move. He said muttered under his breath, went to her, picked her up, and sat back down in her chair with her on his lap. She leaned her head against his shoulder and watch the fire. His thoughts were so jumbled. He thought back to all the times he saw her over the last 9 months and with this new insight into her he could see little things that she did, that she may or may not even realize that she did like walk on the opposite side of the hallway of men passing her by even if they were in a wheelchair. The way she would avoid any kind of physical contact with anyone except her woman co-workers. He wasn't sure what to do or say. He asked, "Why do you like to go to that club?" She said, "Because I teach the lessons. I love to dance." "Aren't there other clubs that you could teach at?," he asked. She shrugged and said she likes this one.

He wasn't sure if he should tell her about the phone call he made or not, but he couldn't let what happened go. "So", he says. "What if I told you I have a friend at the State Bureau of Investigation office and we have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon?" She looked up at him, but didn't say a word. "I doubt it will make a difference", she finally says looking back at the fire. "So you'll go with me?" She shook her head yes.

She got up off his lap and held out his hand. "Stay with me?", she asked. He asked, "Are you sure?" She nodded. He took her hand and led him to her bedroom where she had another fireplace that had already been started. She went to the bed and scooted up to the center. She asked, "o you need to take your leg off?" He said, "That depends." "On what", she asked. "On what you're wanting from me." She said, "For now just sleep. I don't want to be alone." He nodded, he removed his shoes and then his jeans, leaving his boxers on. He removed his prosthetic and scooted up on the bed. He hadn't slept with a woman since before the accident so was a little apprehensive on how she'd react to his leg. She was on his right side. They were on top of the covers. He laid back and she snuggled into his side and aid her head on his shoulder. She then said, "Thank you for everything you did tonight and for staying." He just gave her a squeeze and didn't say anything. As they lay there watching the fire, he could feel her relaxing and a little while later her breathing had evened out as she fell asleep. At some point he must have drifted off because the next thing he knew he heard Mia moaning and reaching for her neck trying to remove and imaginary hand. He held onto her hands and shook her a bit to get her to wake up from her nightmare. "Mia, stop!" he yelled. She finally opened her eyes and realized she was home and safe. She clung to him like an anchor for a while. She finally set up and said she was sorry. He told her not to worry about it that she had been through alot. "Will you take off your shirt?", she asked. He looked at her with her tear streaked face and said, "I don't think that's a good idea." She looked at him and pleaded, "lease." He leaned forward and took his t-shirt off. She leaned back into him. "You're so warm", she said. He chuckled and said, "Well when you have your own heater laying on you that tends to happen." She laughed this time. A real laugh. He wanted to hear that from her again. She was running her hand over his chest and down his stomach. He let out a low hiss and asked, "What are you doing?" She had leaned forward and was kissing her way down the path that her hand had just taken. She said, "Well if I have to explain it, I guess I'm not doing it right." But she didn't stop. He grabbed a hold of her hands and said, "You know I'm not expecting anything." She looked up at him and then down where he had a hold of her hands and back up at him. He let her go. She continued her exploration down his body.

He hadn't noticed when she had shifted herself between his legs. He started feeling self-conscious. He told her, "I will always have issues." She leaned over and kissed his left knee and then down to the nub where is leg ended and then back up to his boxers. She nipped his erection lightly through his boxers. she pulled them down and off. He was standing at attention. She kissed her way back his right leg and sucked lightly on his balls and licked a trail up the length of his dick to the head. "You promise?", she asked. Jax' had his hands clinched and he had to ask, "What?" She chuckled while pumping his dick and asked again, "You promise?" He looked at her and looked at her with a funny look on his face. She smiled up at him and said, "o you promise you always have this kind of issue? I can live with this issue." It finally dawned on him what she was saying. He gave her the biggest smile she had ever seen on him. It reached clear to his eyes. She continued to pump him and suck him clear to the back of her throat. He groaned and threaded one hand through her hair. She hollowed her cheeks and ran you tongue the length of him. Then she dipped or tongue into his slit. He had to make her stop or he'd pop right there on the spot. She leaned back on her knees and put one hand on each of his thighs. She asked, "id I do something wrong?" He said, "No, but I don't want to come in or mouth, I'd rather be in you." Her cheeks flushed and she said, "Oh".

She was still fully dressed. He leaned forward to undo her shirt. He was about to slip it off her shoulders when she said, "Wait". She looked at him and said, "Before we go any farther, you should know I'll always have issues too." He gave her a quizzical look and said, "like what?" She said, "Well I'll always be 8 years older, getting older every year." He chuckled and said, "Well that makes two of us." She said, "Maybe, but this..." She slowly turned around and slid her shirt off her shoulders. He gasped. She started to put her shirt back on when he said, "on't". He looked at the gashes and said, "id he do this too?" She said, "Yes. It was after particularly bad day and I did "something" wrong...I can't even tell you what it was now and he went crazy." Then she felt the lightest of touches. "Lie down", he told her. She did. Then she felt him kissing each bump, scar, slash left by the whip that had been used on her. By the time he was done panties were drenched...most likely through her jeans too. He told her to roll over and undid her jeans pulling them down her legs. He noticed more scars and kissed each one on the way back up to her mound that he could tell was dripping with honey. He slid a finger through her folds and she moaned. His first lick of her folds had her lifting up off the bed. He put a hand on her stomach to hold her in place. He then attacked her clit and she went wild. It didn't take long for her to come. As her breathing came back to normal, he kissed his way up the rest of her body giving each breast equal and thorough attention. She was starting to squirm. He told her they would need to switch positions. She understood and so they flipped. He also told her that he didn't have any condoms. He hadn't thought anything like this would happen. She reached over to her night stand and pulled one out. He raised an eyebrow, but locked the question away for later. She ripped it open with her teeth and rolled it over his erection. He hissed again. She then positioned herself over him and slowly took him all the way to the hilt. He let her set the pace...and what a pace it was. She'd go slow and then fast and then she'd do this figure 8 thing with her hips that was driving him nuts. He told her he couldn't last much longer so she sped up her pace. He met her thrust for thrust...and before they knew it they were both coming and breathing erratically. She collapsed on top of him until their breathing returned to normal. "Wow," she said. He chuckled and said, "You can say that again." "Wow," she said. He chuckled again. She pulled up and off of him to lay beside him. She pulled the condom off him and tossed it in the trash can next to the bed. She then went and got a warm wash rag to clean him up. The then snuggled down and were almost back to sleep when she said, "What will happen tomorrow?" "About what?", he asked. She said, "Us." He answered honestly saying, "I don't know. Let's take one day at a time and we'll see." She snuggled in closer and said, "Ok." They then fell asleep in each other's arms.
